Problem: The aftermath of Hurricane Hilary brought
unprecedented flooding to Death Valley, an area that typically receives only about 2 inches of rainfall per year. The extreme weather conditions caused severe road washouts, eroding the base and shoulders of Highway 190, making it impassable in several sections. Given the region’s harsh climate and the rarity of such storms, California transportation officials needed a durable, long-term solution to reinforce the road and prevent future failures.
Solution: To mitigate further erosion and stabilize the roadway, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) turned to gabion baskets and mattresses. Happy 250th Birthday, USA!
Surviving 250 years is a strong example of resilience. Last week I was called to a handful of challenging construction sites in a few different cities. Each site suffered varying degrees of erosion damage and needed repair. One had much more rain and runoff than expected.
We met as a team with the property manager, engineer and contractor. Shared ideas and devised a plan to improve the site; make it more resilient. Similar conversations with other teams at other sites. Some areas desperately need rain so they can establish vegetation.
